Radioactive Shrimp Recall Now Includes Kroger Stores in Michigan
A few weeks ago, you probably heard about the radioactive shrimp recall that hit Walmart shoppers in several states outside of Michigan. Well, now that same issue has landed here at home, this time involving shrimp sold at Kroger stores across Michigan.
Seriously, radioactive shrimp?
The Food and Drug Administration just announced yet another frozen shrimp recall, and this one’s a big one. More than 85,000 pounds are being pulled from grocery store freezers across the country.
What Shrimp Products Are Being Recalled in Michigan?
The Sept. 20 recall includes three products made by Seattle-based AquaStar (USA) Corp:
About 49,920 bags (2 lbs) of Kroger Raw Colossal EZ Peel Shrimp
About 18,000 bags (2 lbs) of Kroger Mercado Cooked Medium Peeled Tail-Off Shrimp
About 17,264 bags (1.25 lbs) of AquaStar Raw Peeled Tail-On Shrimp Skewers
These shrimp were sold at major grocery chains, including Kroger, Ralphs, Smith’s, Fry’s, Food 4 Less, Fred Meyer, and a long list of other affiliated stores in more than 30 states, including Michigan.
Why the FDA Says the Shrimp Could Be Dangerous
The FDA says the shrimp may have been handled in unsanitary conditions, which could have contaminated it with cesium 137. That’s a radioactive material that, with repeated exposure over time, can raise the risk of cancer. Definitely not something anyone wants to hear about their food.

What to Do If You Bought the Shrimp
So far, no illnesses have been reported, but the FDA isn’t taking chances. If you bought any of these products, don’t eat them. Throw them away or return them to the store for a refund.
