Yankee Candle Closing 20 Stores and Michigan Could Be Affected
Yankee Candle customers might want to pay attention because the company is about to make some big changes.
Newell Brands, the parent company of Yankee Candle, just announced it’s laying off 900 workers and closing 20 stores in January 2026. And yes, Michigan could be part of that.
Right now, Michigan has roughly five Yankee Candle locations, including spots in Auburn Hills, Birch Run, Frankenmuth, Grand Rapids, and Byron Center. With such a small number in the state, even losing one would be pretty noticeable. At least for those who only buy their candles at the actual stores instead of grabbing them online or at places like Kohl’s or Meijer.

What Yankee Candle Stores Are Closing?
This is the annoying part: the company hasn’t released the closure list yet, so nobody knows which stores are going to close.
According to MLive, the layoffs hit about 10 percent of its office staff, and the 20 store closures represent just a small portion of total sales. But the company has been struggling.

Newell says the cuts should save them around $110 to $130 million a year, but they’ll burn through up to $90 million first on severance and other cleanup costs.
Bottom line: Yankee Candle is making big cuts, and until they drop the closure list, Michigan shoppers won’t know if their local store is on it.
