The holidays are fun. They’re loud, they’re busy, they come with gatherings, drinks, maybe an edible, maybe both. Suddenly it’s later than you thought and you’re standing there asking yourself, 'Am I actually okay to drive?' That moment matters... a lot.

Why Tow to Go Exists and Why It Matters

AAA is bringing back something called Tow to Go in Michigan, and honestly it’s one of the smartest backup plans you can have this time of year.

From 6 p.m. on Christmas Eve through 6 a.m. on January 2, they’re offering free tows to help impaired or intoxicated drivers get home safely. And here’s the key part: you don’t have to be a AAA member. This is free for anyone.

How the Free Tow Program Works in Michigan

If you’ve had too much to drink or taken something that makes driving a bad idea, you can call 1-855-286-9246 and they’ll send a tow truck to get you and your car home. No charge. No lectures. No awkward questions. They’ll tow you up to 10 miles, which for most people is plenty to get home or somewhere safe.

AAA is very clear about one thing, though. This isn’t something you schedule ahead of time. It’s a last-resort option, a safety net for when plans change or things sneak up on you. And honestly, that’s exactly when people need it most.

Over the past 25 years, this program has completed around 25,000 free tows according to ABC 12. That’s 25,000 times someone made the smart call instead of risking their life, or someone else’s.

A Holiday Backup Plan Worth Sharing

So maybe save the number in your phone. Maybe share it with a friend or two. Hopefully you never need it. But if you do, it’s there. And that could make all the difference.
