As Michigan residents battle extreme temperatures once again this week, heat-related deaths in the United States have hit an all-time high.

Currently, much of the southern half of Michigan's Lower Peninsula is under a Heat Advisory, in effect until Tuesday (8/27) at 10 PM. As temperatures reach the lower 90s for many in Michigan, heat indices will react 102 for some.

Although Michigan residents are currently coping with high temperatures, over 75 million Americans are being urged to take precautions as temperatures in parts of the Midwest could top 100 degrees Tuesday.

Data published by JAMA indicates that 21,518 deaths related to extreme heat occurred between 1999 and 2023. The report shows that the number of heat-related deaths in the US spiked in 2006 and 2011 and then began a steady increase after 2016. The highest number of deaths attributed to extreme heat occurred in 2023, with 2,324 people losing their lives due to extreme heat.

This coincides with data indicating that the warmest average temperatures recorded since 1850 occurred in 2023.

According to the Weather Channel, more people die in America due to extreme heat than any other weather condition.

Excessive Heat in Michigan

While the majority of heat-related deaths typically occur in Arizona, Texas, and Nevada, heat can also be a factor in Michigan. While no deaths in Michigan were attributed to excessive heat in 2022, Michigan residents are urged to exercise caution when the mercury climbs.

Michigan.Gov recommends taking these steps to protect yourself against extreme heat.

  • Stay indoors with air conditioning as much as possible and limit sun exposure.
  • If your home does not have air conditioning, visit public libraries, shopping malls, or other indoor public places.
  • Drink plenty of fluids, but limit alcoholic beverages.
  • Avoid strenuous work outdoors, especially during peak heat hours.
  • Never leave children or pets in closed vehicles.
  • Check on family and neighbors who do not have air conditioning or spend a lot of time alone.
