A three-time cancer survivor from Michigan is brought to tears when she relives the special treatment she got from country-rock superstar Jelly Roll at his concert in Midland.

Jelly Roll packed a lot into the weekend when he visited Michigan in July, getting deputized by Sheriff Christ Swanson as he helped the sheriff and his crew dedicate the county's new Jailhouse Music Studio.

But contrary to popular belief, Jelly didn't grab a bite at the Burger King in Midland during his visit to Michigan. We shared the "story about the story" after a satirical website in Midland published a heartwarming and believable tale of a retired couple buying food for Jelly Roll because his disheveled appearance made him look homeless.

Jelly Roll Spots a Woman With an IV Pole at His Midland Concert

Kathi Montalvo was at the Midland County Fairgrounds on July 27th as the crowd of about 1,500 welcomed Jelly Roll to the stage. The Muskegon woman tells WZZM-TV that seeing Jelly Roll in concert has been on her to-do list in the months following her fatal cancer diagnosis.

Montalvo is a three-time cancer survivor. In December of last year, she was told she probably had about three months to live.

"The last time, instead of chemo for my hair, I went through nuclear medicine," she said. "The side effects in nuclear is it's eating my soft tissue and organs."

Because of the damage to her esophagus caused by the nuclear medicine, she now receives all of her food and water through IV bags, to which she's connected 17 hours per day.

During the July 27 show, Jelly Roll spotted Montavlo from the stage. One of her IV bags had popped and the pole was broken. Jelly Roll stopped the concert, asked his crew members to pull her over the barricade, and gave her a chair to sit in.

TikTok video of her special moment has since gone viral.

"No matter what I have time left to do for the rest of it, I got that, I got Jelly Roll, and he noticed me. I'm not invisible," Montavlo said.

Midland's John Pratt Mosaic House

Just outside of Midland is the childhood home of gifted artist John Pratt. The home is adorned with shimmering bits of broken glass, china, and mirrored tiles that create a window into Pratt's creative soul.

Pratt suffered from mental illness and as part of his recovery, decorated the outside walls of the home with murals that, in the words of this website, "represented his illness, his re-discovered zest for living, and his beliefs about tolerance and unconditional love."

Since his death, the home has been owned and maintained by Creative 360 which offers guided tours of the premises. Our thanks to Ashley Cottrell who provided the pictures below.
