While there are obvious substitutes for hard-boiling eggs for an Easter egg hunt, such as plastic eggs, jelly beans or even toys, it seems that even chocolate eggs by the dozen may be cheaper that good ol' regular eggs. Right now you can get a four-pack of Cadbury Eggs for about the same price as a dozen eggs at Meijer stores.

But chocolate eggs could melt during an Easter egg hunt if the temperatures are warm enough and they can't be used for cooking. So we've discovered a few affordable egg substitutes that can save Michiganders some money both during egg hunts and in the kitchen.

Replacements for Egg Hunts

Obviously the cheaper replacement for real eggs are plastic eggs. They won't be affected by the bird flue outbreak that caused the price hike in the first place. Just make sure they're made in America otherwise you could be paying more due to the current tariff war.

Michiganders can also paint Petoskey stones and other rocks to simulate coloring eggs. Just don't get these confused with these during an egg toss. For that you should use the real thing.

Replacements for Cooking and Baking

I was stunned to discover all of the options when it comes to egg substitutions for baking and cooking. There are obviously different replacements for certain types of recipes.

According to a popular cooking site you can use everything from mashed bananas, applesauce and silken tofu to yogurt, buttermilk and ground flaxseed. You could also use sweetened condensed milk, arrowroot powder, cornstarch or canned chickpea liquid.

There are also several combinations of other foods that can be used including oil, water and baking powder or vinegar and baking soda.
