A 62-year-old Michigan man was killed this morning (4/7) in what officials are calling a 'fatal workplace accident'. Troy Goodnough, Sheriff of Monroe County, confirmed that his office was dispatched to the incident early this morning.
According to a press release issued by the Monroe County Sheriff's Office they responded just before 1:30 a.m. to an emergency at Stellantis' Dundee Engine Plant on North Ann Arbor Road in Dundee.
Sheriff's deputies found the Detroit resident after he sustained a serious injury from a machine on the assembly line. The injured autoworker was immediately rushed to a local hospital. Police have not disclosed the nature of the injury but local media reports that the autoworker was crushed by a piece of equipment. Unfortunately the victim's injury was fatal and he was later pronounced dead.
A statement issued by Stellantis offered condolences to coworkers as well and friends and family. The identity was not revealed out of respect for the family of the employee.
The statement continued by saying, 'The Company is currently working with local authorities to investigate the incident. Out of respect for the family, we are not confirming the identity of the employee at this time. Counseling services will be available for Dundee Engine Plant employees.'
Employees at the Dundee Engine Plant are represented by UAW Local 723 which also issued a statement: 'An investigation into this incident is now underway. We will share more once we understand what happened, but for now we ask everyone to keep our member’s family in their hearts and prayers.'
The investigation was confirmed by Michigan OSHA. They said that they 'cannot provide information on an open investigation. These types of investigations typically take several weeks or months to complete.'
