Former Michigan Bus Driver Says Kindness Cost Her Job

A former Michigan school bus driver is taking her fight to federal court after losing her job over something she insists was approved ahead of time, and meant to be a demonstration of kindness.

What the Bus Driver Says Happened

Sarah Robinson says she was fired after handing out small candy bags to kids on her bus around holidays like Halloween and Christmas. Some of the bags included short Christian messages. Others didn’t.

According to her lawsuit, no student was ever pressured to take a bag. Kids were told they could say no or grab an alternative without any religious message. She also says a Jewish-themed option was available for at least one student.

WOOD-TV said that Robinson isn’t speaking on camera, but she filed the lawsuit on her own after getting some legal help drafting it.

Why the Investigation Is Central to the Lawsuit

The complaint says her supervisor initially told her the candy bags were okay as long as participation was optional. That guidance was later reversed by the superintendent, and an investigation followed.

A big part of the lawsuit focuses on how that investigation was handled. Robinson claims she was questioned repeatedly and treated as though the district had already made up its mind. She also says bus camera footage was never reviewed, even though parents were present when the bags were handed out.

Robinson was fired last April. She also claims the district labeled her termination as “misconduct” when reporting it to the state for unemployment, a decision that was later overturned on appeal. She says the lack of clarity around her firing led to rumors and damaged her reputation.

What Robinson's Lawsuit Is Seeking

The lawsuit includes multiple claims, including religious discrimination and denial of due process. Robinson is asking for back pay, possible future pay, and other damages. The Mattawan school district says it does not comment on active litigation.
