Mowing the lawn seems like such a simple, everyday task. But the truth is, anytime you’re operating machinery with sharp, fast-moving parts, there’s always a risk involved. Lawn mowers in particular may seem harmless, but if they’re not handled carefully or if something goes wrong, they can quickly become dangerous—and even deadly.

Everyday Task Turns Tragic

Sadly, that’s exactly what happened in Huron County last Friday, September 19, 2025. A horrific accident claimed the life of 49-year-old David D. Lamke, a farm worker from Sherman Township.

According to reports, Lamke had been cutting grass on the property with a John Deere zero-turn mower. Coworkers said after not seeing him for more than an hour, they began to worry and went looking for him. That’s when they made the tragic discovery. Lamke was found in a ditch along Finkel Road, pinned beneath the overturned mower.

Authorities Respond to the Scene

Sherman Township deputies were dispatched to the scene at around 1:18 p.m. Emergency responders rushed to try to free him, but by the time they reached Lamke, it was too late. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigation and Next Steps

The Huron County Medical Examiner’s Office has ordered an autopsy to learn more about the circumstances of his death. Meanwhile, Sherman Township authorities have confirmed that the investigation remains ongoing.
