Post offices will be closed and mail delivery will be suspended to honor President Jimmy Carter, who passed away on December 29. President Carter's funeral will be held on that day, as January 9 has been declared a national day of mourning.

Carter will be buried next to his wife Rosalynn Carter at their home in Plains, Georgia.

President Joe Biden Declares National Day of Mourning

January 9 has been declared a National Day of Mourning, honoring our 39th president.

"President Carter was a man of character, courage, and compassion, whose lifetime of service defined him as one of the most influential statesmen in our history," President Joe Bident said.

What Else is Open or Closed on January 9?

The National Day of Mourning is not a federal holiday, however, federal offices will be closed. Most (but not all) federal workers will be exempt from working on January 9.

The New York Stock Exchange will also be closed on Thursday, January 9. Trading of all US equities and options will be closed as well, as reported by the Dispatch. Bond Markets will be closing at 2 pm Eastern Time.

Fed Ex, UPS, and Amazon deliveries will not be suspended on January 9. Federal Express offices and UPS stores will remain open.

While most banks and credit unions generally observe the federal holiday calendar, financial institutions have the flexibility to determine their own hours of operation and may choose to remain open on January 9, 2025.

For instance, Huntington Bank and Dort Financial Credit Union are opting to remain open. It's best to contact your financial institution to find out their hour of operation.
