A produce recall tied to salmonella is hitting Michigan, and if you shop at Gordon Food Service, you might want to check your fridge.

Shoppers are urged to check their kitchens after the Food and Drug Administration issued a multi-state recall of vine ripe tomatoes due to possible salmonella contamination.

The affected produce, sold in clamshell containers at Gordon Food Service stores, was distributed in 11 states, including Michigan, as part of a recall issued by Indianapolis-based Ray & Mascari Inc. following concerns raised by a Florida-based supplier.

What Should Consumers Do?

If you've purchased these products, you should not eat them. Products should be returned to the place of purchase for a refund or discarded immediately.

Be sure to wash any surfaces or containers that may have come into contact with the potentially contaminated product.

There have been no reported cases of illness due to contaminated tomatoes.

Understanding the Risk of Salmonella

According to the FDA, Salmonella is a bacterium that can cause serious infections, particularly in young children, older adults, and individuals with weakened immune systems.

Healthy individuals can also be affected and may exhibit symptoms like fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain.

On a Personal Note ...

As a fan of simple meals, I’ve come up with a great recipe for tomatoes:
Step 1: Throw them straight in the trash.
(I’m not a fan of tomatoes, unless it’s in the form of pizza sauce.)
