It seems like you can't drive anywhere in Michigan these days without encountering a roundabout. What was once a rare sight has quickly become a staple of the state's roadways, popping up at intersections where stoplights once ruled. Love them or hate them, roundabouts are designed to improve traffic flow and safety. And now, Genesee County is getting ready to offer drivers yet another 'merry-go-round' to navigate.

This week, Grand Blanc Township Supervisor Scott Bennett announced that the Genesee County Road Commission (GCRC) has secured state funding for a new roundabout heading to Grand Blanc. This project is all of Michigan's ongoing effort to modernize and improve its infrastructure. Bennett announced the news on social media stating,

"I attend/chair monthly meetings for Township Supervisors and their designated representatives to the Genesee County Road Commission Advisory Board. This morning we learned that the GCRC was awarded funding from the State of Michigan for a new roundabout to be constructed in Mundy Township"

Where Will the New Roundabout Be in Genesee County?

According to Bennett, the new roundabout will find its home in Mundy Township and will be constructed at the intersection of Baldwin Road and Fenton Road. Bennett said construction is planned to begin in 2026 on the intersection that has its fair share of traffic. Bennett notes that he realizes that many residents have strong opinions on the subject of roundabouts, so the news may not be as welcomed by some. Still, the goal is to improve the roadways and traffic flow.

Roundabouts have proven to reduce the number of severe accidents by as much as 75% compared to traditional intersections, with a 37% reduction in overall collisions according to the Federal Highway Administration.

While some drivers may need time to adjust, their benefits can't be ignored, making them an increasingly popular choice in road design across Michigan. We will keep you updated on construction as it becomes available.
