A huge space object is going to hit the planet in May... but Where? The problem is experts are not quite sure exactly when or where it will hit our planet.

What is Falling From the Sky?

After orbiting the Earth for over 50 years, a satellite launched by the former Soviet Union is expected to fall from the sky in May. With an original mission to travel to Venus, a Kosmos 482 malfunctioned in 1972 and has been orbiting Earth ever since.

The satellite is estimated to be around 1,000 pounds. Obviously zero gravity in space, but a very large object to just fall out of the sky. This thing, depending on where it lands, could do some serious damage. That is, of course, if it doesn't break up upon re-entry into the Earth's atmosphere.

When Will The Satellite Crash?

That's the scary part of the story. Neither officials or scientists can pinpoint when due to many factors. However they are estimating somewhere between the 8th through 11th of May of this year.

The main problem with getting a true fix on exactly when this will happen is due to the fact that the spacecraft was configured with a heat-shield. This means that it might fall apart right away, or the heat-shield will stabilize the craft which would prolong it's inevitable crash.

How Bad Will The Impact Be?

If it breaks up immediately upon hitting the atmosphere most of the debris will burn up before it hits the ground, if it even does.

However if it maintains it's structure because if it's heat-shield one-thousand pounds of satellite could come down literally anywhere!  As the satellite gets closer I would check back for updates and maybe stay in a basement or bunker that day... just in case.
