If you're driving over the speed limit, you might not see flashing blue lights before you receive your next speeding ticket—Michigan's new speed camera system may automatically generate that ticket.

Speed Cameras Could be Popping up on Michigan Highways

The Michigan Senate has passed two proposals that would allow speed cameras to be installed in construction zones along Michigan highways. The legislation was approved by the Michigan House of Representatives in June 2023 and also has support from the Michigan Infrastructure and Transportation Association.

House Bill 4132 just passed the House of Representatives on Wednesday (11/13) and awaits a signature from Governor Whitmer.

Under current Michigan law, citations can only be issued if a traffic offense is witnessed by a police officer.

What Are the Fines for Speeding in a Michigan Construction Zone?

The language in the bills says that if you're going 10 miles per hour over the posted speed limit in a construction zone while workers are present, a citation can be automatically generated.

The first offense would result in a warning while stiff fines would be issued for subsequent offenses. A $150 fine would be imposed for a driver's second offense and the penalty would increase to $300 for the third.

If the legislation is signed into law by Governor Whitmer, Michigan would join 17 other states that enforce the generation of automatic speeding tickets.

Crashes and Fatalaties in Michigan Work Zones

The Detroit News reports that Michigan recorded more than 8,000 construction zone crashes in 2023. These crashes resulted in nearly 2,000 injures and 24 fatalities according to the Michigan State Police's Office of Higway Safety Planning.
