Christmas Tree Permit

If cutting down your own Christmas tree is your mission for this Christmas season, there are a few details you must keep in mind.

You need to purchase a permit to cut your own Christmas tree. You have two options for purchasing the permit. You can do it online or in person at Huron-Mainstee National Forests' district offices on weekdays between 9:00 AM and 4:00 PM.

Each Christmas tree needs its permit. Each permit will cost you $5.00. Keep in mind, that you are only allowed up to 5 permits per person, per season.

So, if you want more than 5 Christmas trees, another person will need to pay for the permits.

If you have an Every Kid Outdoors pass or voucher, you are eligible for a free Christmas tree permit if you check the box that says that you have a pass.

How Long Can You Get A Christmas Tree Permit?

Christmas tree permits are valid until December 31st, 2024.

HMNF shared the importance of waiting to get your tree till after a few hard frosts or consistently cold days.

Waiting for these specific temperatures and conditions will guarantee that the trees have fallen to hardened dormancy.

Christmas Tree Cuttings Don't's

There are a few things you should avoid when cutting your own Christmas tree.

Do not cut on private land, wilderness areas, experimental forests, research natural areas, recreation residence tracts, or any existing tree plantations.

You should not cut trees within 100 feet of water, campgrounds, picnic areas, trailheads, or paved roads and 50 feet from dirt roads.
