As a Michigan transplant, being prepared for a winter storm in D.C. is A LOT different than preparing for a winter storm in Michigan.

Whether you're facing heavy snow, freezing rain, or frigid temperatures, being prepared can make all the difference.

By planning ahead and taking a few proactive steps, you can help ensure that you and your family stay safe and comfortable during a winter storm.

Stay Informed with Weather Alerts

Knowing when a storm is coming is your first line of defense.

It is super important to stay informed through local news, weather apps, or NOAA Weather Radio broadcasts.

I ended up setting up weather alerts on my phone. Besides the alerts, you can install a weather app that provides real-time updates.

Create a Family Emergency Plan

Before the snow starts to fall, make sure you have a family emergency plan in place. This includes knowing where to go and how to contact each other in case of power outages or if you are separated during the storm.

In your plan, designate a meeting spot in case you need to leave your home, and ensure that everyone knows how to reach out for help if necessary.

Besides a plan, you should also have an emergency kit with tools and resources for the whole family. You can read below to find recommendations to add your kit.

Winterize Your Home

No, this does not mean decorate it for the holidays.

Preparing your home for a winter storm can prevent damage and help keep you warm. Some steps you can take include:

  • Check your heating system to ensure it's working efficiently. Consider scheduling a furnace inspection if you haven't already.
  • Seal any drafts around windows and doors with weather stripping or caulk to keep the cold air out and warm air in.
  • Insulate pipes to prevent them from freezing. You can wrap exposed pipes with foam insulation or heating tape.
  • Stock up on firewood or ensure your fireplace or wood stove is ready to use in case of a power outage.

Prepare Your Car for Winter Conditions

Making sure that you and your family are safe during a winter storm is crucial. However, do not forget about your car (because I sure did!).

If you must drive during or after a winter storm, it’s crucial to ensure your car is ready for the road. Winterize your vehicle by:

  • Checking your tires: Make sure they have adequate tread and are inflated to the recommended pressure. Consider switching to winter tires if you frequently drive in heavy snow or ice.
  • Inspecting your battery: Cold temperatures can be tough on car batteries. Get yours tested to ensure it has plenty of charge.
  • Equipping your car with emergency supplies: In addition to your standard kit, make sure you have items like a snow shovel, ice scraper, blanket, and extra warm clothing in your vehicle.

Help Vulnerable Neighbors

Michigan’s winter storms can be especially difficult for the elderly, disabled, or anyone who may not have the means to prepare or care for themselves, including a Michigan transplant like me.

If you have neighbors who may need assistance, offer help with shoveling, checking on them during the storm, or making sure they have enough supplies.
