North American monarch butterflies are in trouble. Not one monarch butterfly was seen at the annual Seven Ponds Butterfly Count, for example. Their numbers have fallen so drastically they’re being considered for federal protection. Their decline coincides with the increased use of Roundup and increased acreage planted with Roundup Ready crops say environmentalists. In the first wave of grants, Michigan was awarded $119,496 on Monday to restore monarch habitat in the Central Upper Peninsula. The project will improve peninsulas and open coastal sites along the Upper Peninsula’s primary migratory flyway.
