Michigan Lawmaker: Bring Back the Black & Blue License Plates

Who wants to go old school the next time you have to re-up your plates? A Michigan state lawmaker has a solution for you!

We all love nostalgia. That's why they're doing a Father of the Bride 3(ish) reunion tonight on Netflix. Those of us who were kids back then are all grown up now, and ready to spend our money on stuff that makes us feel good, especially in the year 2020.

The black Michigan license plate with white letters was the standard from 1979 to 1983. Then, the blue license plate with white letters arrived and was around until 2007. After that, Michigan switched to white license plates with blue letters, as well as specialty license plates that include the Mackinac Bridge.

Now, State Sen. Mallory McMorrow of Royal Oak has introduced Senate Bill 1146, which would bring back the classic black and blue options...for an additional $100 fee on top of your registration.

“Any Michigander who grew up here in the ’80s and ’90s remembers the simple, iconic design and knows bringing back the blue plate is a no-brainer,” McMorrow told ABC12.

Some may say that there are more important bills that need attention in Michigan right now. But Sen. McMorrow says that besides raising revenue to help fix our roads that "I think it's an added bonus when we can indulge in some nostalgia and fix a problem simultaneously."

She also added in a statement to CARS108 that the program is modeled after a California measure from a similar legacy plate in 2014 and that has since raised over $20M in new revenue for them.
