It's illegal to drive without insurance in Michigan, but now it's going to be considerably harder to get away with riding dirty.

Starting in September, all police will have to do is run your license plate to find out if you have insurance.  A new on car computer will cross check your plate with a new database of insured drivers to make sure you're legal.

The police are saying that they won't use this technology to pull people over, but there are many skeptics.  They are also billing this as a way to protect drivers from buying phony insurance, but we all know that this is a tool used to catch drivers riding dirty.

Insurance companies will only be required to submit policy information to the state twice a month, so the database will always be up to date.

I wouldn't be surprised if we see a sudden hike in the penalties for driving without insurance.
