Nominations for the Lapeer Chamber of Commerce annual citizens of the year awards are now open.

The Lapeer Area View says the award recognizes the contributions to the community by an outstanding man and woman living in Lapeer County whose volunteer involvement and support make a positive mark on the community and improve the quality of life for others.

It's been 34 years since the first award was presented. Initially it was only presented to one individual, but expanded to include one female and one male recipient in 1983. An annual awards banquet is held to recognize the winners as well as other nominees. This year's event will mark the 35th year and will take place on January 22nd at Mott Community College in place of the monthly Wake Up Lapeer breakfast. Tickets will be $13.

Some of the criteria for nominating individuals include:

  • How the community benefits from the person's volunteer contribution.
  • How long has the individual been an influence in the community.
  • What volunteer efforts are they consistently involved in?
  • Has their involvement on civic boards or commissions benefited the community at large?

Nomination forms are being accepted through December 22nd and are available by calling the Lapeer Chamber of Commerce at (810) 664-6641 or by visiting their website at: www.lapeerareachamber.org.
