PHOTOS: All The Halloween Costumes For Hurley’s NICU Babies

"What if your greatest fears and most beautiful dreams existed in the same place? Welcome to the NICU."

Every year, 380,000 babies are born prematurely in the United States, which comes out to one in every ten. Luckily, we have the region's only Level III NICU (neonatal intensive care unit) right here in Flint at Hurley Medical Center's Children's Hospital.

You may have heard us talk about the wonderful staff and the Children's Miracle Network during our radiothon at the start of the month; now, let me tell you about the fantastic volunteers who make the adorable costumes for these tiny new people - the Hurley Volunteer Corps.

They've been around since the hospital opened back in 1908; since then, they've held events to help create the women's ward, waiting room, patient's nursing wards, and more. Today, more than 100 years later, the Hurley Volunteer Corps helps to assist in 30 different areas of the hospital.

One of the ways in which they help is to bring joy to the families who have babies in the NICU by knitting them these adorable, teeny-tiny Halloween costumes and Christmas outfits.

"They knit or crochet the outfits which the families get to take home. We provide all of the families with a beautiful photo," said Peggy Agar, the marketing/social media specialist at Hurley. "It's a great way for them to feel like they aren't missing out on those special moments. They have a nice photo like they might have if they were already home, celebrating the holidays with family. We appreciate all of those who take time to make the holidays special for our NICU."
