Greg Lake was in a creative logjam when he started singing a familiar Christmas standard over a new riff that stubbornly refused to go away.

Greg Lake, who helped form King Crimson and Emerson, Lake and Palmer, died Wednesday from cancer at the age of 69. He passed away after "a long and stubborn battle with cancer", according to his manager.
