Grand Funk Railroad guitarist, lead singer and songwriter Mark Farner is Pure Michigan all the way. Mark was born in Flint, on September 29,1948. As a kid in school he dreamed about being a football star but then a knee injury put that on the shelf. Mark’s mother planted the musical seed with her son when she rented him a guitar and bought six lessons.

In a recent interview, Mark Farner, one-time leader of Grand Funk Railroad, talked about the legacy of the mighty band.  “We were a bunch of 20-year-old rock and rollers who were putting our thoughts out there and looking for answers, and so were our fans.” he said. ” We were saying what everybody wanted to say.”

I still remember the excitement we all felt at the radio station in 1977 when word got out that Mark Farner was releasing a solo album.  I think most of Flint was!  We gave it significant airplay but it never caught on nationally and dropped off into rarity territory soon after...
