A giant egg laid by a now-extinct elephant bird sold for $104,482 at an auction in London.

The egg is nearly nine inches wide and 12 inches high. The rare partially fossilized egg is more than 100 times the size of a chicken.

The egg was laid by an ostrich-like bird that weighted more than 1,100 pounds that lived in Madagascar before the 17th century and was the largest bird at the time.

The winning bid was more than twice the expected price.
