It's not too late to get out of the house and take a social-distancing camping trip, Michiganders.

If you're like me, you probably check out the Michigan Department of Natural Resource's site at the beginning of the year to see which campgrounds have availability for the summer. And, if you're like me, you wait too long to book only to find out that ALL THE CAMPSITES ARE GONE.

Au contraire, Michiganders.

The DNR has released a map of Michigan campgrounds that still have some open sites left for the summer, and there are actually quite a few that aren't reserved...yet.

Obviously, the further north that you go, the more limited your selections are for open campsites this late in the summer. If you're looking to make your way up to Mackinac, Cheboygan or Petoskey, you'll be at more of a loss.

Surprisingly enough, if you're looking to camp in or near Traverse City, there are some sites still available through the end of summer. Ludington and Mears also have some openings, too.

The above map shows the current availability through August 6th, so this is obviously subject to change. Make sure you call ahead before attempting to make an online reservation.

I'm telling ya, camping is a great way to get out of the house while continuing to socially distance from others. Don't let this summer get away from you! It's Michigan; you don't have to go very far to find a beautiful, secluded place to take the family and enjoy the outdoors.
