If you’re tired of being cooped up inside and you want to try something new, or you haven’t been in forever or your license expired and you don’t wanna go get a new one, or whatever your reason is, this weekend is a 'Free Fishing Weekend' in Michigan.

That means Saturday and Sunday (June 13-14) you can go out and try your hand at "hookin’ a big one" without having to worry about the license. You do still have to follow all other fishing regulations the DNR has set, so if you don’t normally "wet a line", you may want to read up on the rules HERE.

“Being outdoors and enjoying Michigan’s world-class fisheries never gets old,” said Jim Dexter, DNR Fisheries Division chief. “We encourage families to plan a day of fishing for this year’s summer Free Fishing Weekend to enjoy the fun of fishing together.”

According to the Michigan DNR, you have 11,000 inland lakes, tens of thousands of miles of river banks, and of course 3,000 miles of shoreline courtesy of the Great Lakes to go out and explore and try to catch dinner. All without a license this weekend. And if you're wondering, yes that even applies to out-of-state residents who want to come enjoy some fishing in the mitten state.

Also, you won't have to pay a recreation passport fee at any of the 103 state parks or boating access points because it's the "Free Fishing Weekend", and because those fees have been waived since the start of the coronavirus pandemic.

If you are going out fishing this weekend, don’t forget you still should be practicing social distancing, which means staying 6 feet away from people you’re not living with.
