For the most part, we all know that you shouldn't touch a downed power line. It's dangerous and potentially fatal because you can never truly tell if a power line has electricity running though it unless it's sparking.

But just in case you don't believe me, DTE has made this  video to explain to you exactly why you should stay away from what seems harmless.

A video posted to Tiktok by user @TheOutdoorConquest shows a real life example of what can happen when a downed powerline is live. He is a journeyman line worker who was working in Commerce Charter Township after the storms this weekend.

At first everything seems pretty normal, other than storm damage and a downed powerline that isn't showing any signs of sparking or being live.

until he pans down, and shows the earth at the bottom of the sign that the power line is laying across.

No, that isn't mud, that's where live electricity is actually making contact with the ground via the sign and burning the ground. The reason it's so dramatically obvious in this situation is because the metal from the sign is such a great conductor of electricity.

So, this is a friendly reminder to everyone as storm season rolls back into Michigan, play it safe and avoid touching or crossing any downed powerlines you may find.

What should I do if I find a power line down?

You should always report downed power lines you find. You can call Consumers Energy quickly at 800-477-5050. For non-emergency situations, you can also report the wire to DTE online, if that is easier for you.

And whatever you do- Don't touch it!
