On Wednesday (9/3) around 8:45 PM, Lapeer County 911 received calls from numerous motorists regarding a red in color passenger vehicle traveling Westbound I-69 near Lake Pleasant Road in Attica. Initial reports were the vehicle was traveling with no headlights turned on and stopping within the roadway (erratic driving pattern). Additional calls were received that the vehicle was traveling eastbound in direction within the westbound lanes with no headlights on.

Deputies and officers were unable to get into a position to intercept or have contact with the vehicle prior to the crash being reported to Lapeer County 911 at 8:48 PM (three minutes after initial call). The crash was head on and occurred within the westbound lanes of I-69 to the west of the Winslow Road overpass.

The driver and only occupant of the vehicle traveling in the wrong direction was pronounced deceased at the scene (female in her 50’s). The westbound vehicle struck head on was a Chrysler Town and Country mini van with a married couple both age 65 from Highland, Michigan.

The couple from Highland Michigan had to be extricated from their vehicle by Attica Township Fire and Rescue. The Highland Michigan couple was transported to McLaren in Lapeer with serious but believed non-life threatening injuries. Imlay City Fire and Rescue had to extricate the deceased driver from their vehicle.

The identity of the deceased driver is withheld pending notification (will update at later time). Westbound I-69 was closed between M-53 and Lake Pleasant Road for three hours for rescue and investigative purposes. The Lapeer County Road Commission responded to remove and clean debris from the expressway prior to it being reopened.

The Lapeer County Sheriff’s Office is continuing to investigate this fatal crash. It has not been determined if alcohol is a factor. Anyone with information is requested to contact Detective Sergeant Jason Parks at 810-245-1381.
