Joining Michigan music royalty Aretha Franklin, Glen Frey, Stevie Wonder, and David Ruffin, Marvin Gaye now has a Detroit street named after him.

Marvin Gaye once lived at the intersection of Outer Drive W and Monica St, just a few miles northwest of Hitsville U.S.A. Now, that roadway has been christened Marvin Gaye Dr. in honor of the Motown star.

By today's standards, the house is unassuming, but has an important place in music history as the iconic cover photo for What's Goin' On was shot in the backyard. Motown founder Berry Gordy (who predicted the What's Goin' On album was going to be a complete failure) gave the house to Gaye, now his brother-in-law after marrying Gordy's sister Anna.

The house sits in an idyllic neighborhood just a few miles northwest of the Motown studios at 2648 W Grand Blvd. It is not too far from the State Fair Grounds, and near Woodlawn Cemetery, the final resting place of Aretha Franklin, The Temptations' David Ruffin, Levi Stubbs, Renaldo "Obie" Benson and Lawrence Payton: three of the Four Tops, Billy Henderson of the Spinners, several Detroit Mayors, Senators and Congresspersons, Horace and John Dodge, co-founders of the car company that bears their name, Henry Ford's grandson William Clay Ford, Sr. and civil rights leader Rosa Parks.

This Detroit house was not where Marvin Gaye was living when he was murdered, that residence is in California. Funeral services were held at Forest Lawn cemetery and his ashes were scattered over the Pacific Ocean off the California coast.

Michigan Representative Helena Scott was at the dedication ceremony and shared the announcement on her Facebook page.
