Bruce Springsteen on Politics: ‘I’d Prefer to Stay on the Sidelines’

When Bruce Springsteen spoke to the press in Paris last month, the outspoken political activist had some choice words for the Obama administration. Now, more of that hour-long press conference has been released.

Initial reports suggested Bruce had little good to say about the what the current White House occupant has done during his three years in office, but that wasn’t the whole story. The transcript from the presser reveals the Boss also praised Obama for his healthcare legislation, taking out Osama bin Laden, and helping put the American auto industry back on its feet.

But while Springsteen feels Obama “brought some sanity to the top level of government,” he also feels the President has been a little too chummy with Corporate America, saying:

He’s more friendly to corporations than I thought he would be, and there aren’t as many middle class or working class voices heard in the administration as I thought there would be. I would have liked to see more active job creation sooner than it came, and I’d like to have seen some of these foreclosures stopped or somehow mitigated.

You might also be surprised to learn that while Bruce rarely misses an opportunity to make his political views known and has been involved in campaigning for candidates, it’s not something he’s terribly fond of doing:

I got into that sort of by accident. What it was, the Bush years were so horrific that [I felt] if you had any cachet whatsoever, you had to cash it in, because you couldn’t sit around and watch it … but I’m not a professional campaigner … I’d prefer to stay on the sidelines. I generally believe an artist is supposed to be the canary in the coalmine, and you’re better off with a certain distance from the seat of power.

‘Wrecking Ball,’ which Bruce has called his most political album ever, has been extraordinarily well-received. In its first day of release, it jumped right into the No. 1 spot on the Amazon and iTunes sales charts — you can pick it up here if you’d like — finally knocking Adele off the perch she’s held for months.
