One ton of confiscated illegal elephant ivory was crushed last Friday in New York ’s Times Square by the US Fish and Wildlife Service. “Behind every piece of ivory is a dead elephant” explains Leigh Henry of the World Wildlife Fund. Ninety six elephants are killed for their tusks every day in Africa . #Ivory Crush won’t stop poaching or put a dent in the global ivory market but was designed rather as a symbolic gesture and to send a message. “When one country crushes ivory, another does. When one country says they're going to tighten their regulations, another does” says Henry. Visit 96elephants.org for more information.
