Even though summer is still in full swing, the Lapeer County Road Commission has winter on its mind! This year it looks like it is going to take a hit in the budget with rock salt pricing out at more than 50% higher than last year!

Usually in September and October of each year, the Road Commission loads the barns in Imlay City and North Branch to prepare for the coming winter. Last year they paid $38.91 per ton for rock salt, this year it is $58.65. When you consider that they average over 9,000 tons of salt a winter, that make the increase pretty significant. Last year's brutal winter used up over 11,000 tons.
