Lars Ulrich Slams Trump’s Mexican Border Wall: ‘I Think We Need to Bring People Together’

The question of whether the United States should build a wall along the Mexican border — and somehow try to make Mexico pay for it — has been hotly divided along ideological lines since Donald Trump first floated the idea during his campaign for the presidency. During a recent interview with a Mexican television network, Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich made it perfectly plain which side of the debate he’s on.

In the country for Metallica’s three-night stand in Mexico City, Ulrich spoke with the Las Estrellas network, and anchor Paola Rojas asked him for his thoughts on the wall. After bluntly stating “I don’t think the world needs any walls,” Ulrich went on to offer a more in-depth — and thoroughly optimistic — view of modern global politics and rock’s role in human relationships.

“I think we need to bring people together. Metallica travels all over the world, and through music we try to bring people together. Whether we’re in Mexico or whether we’re in Asia or whether we’re in Europe or whatever, we encourage as many different people from as many different backgrounds to come together and share music and life and culture and all these experiences,” said Ulrich. “And so, being one Danish guy, being asked an opinion, I don’t think any walls are necessary, and I think that, increasingly, as far as Metallica traveling all over this beautiful planet, we break down barriers with music.”

For fans who’ve paid attention to the political thoughts Ulrich has shared since the 2016 election started grinding into gear, his disagreement with Trump’s border wall proposal shouldn’t come as any surprise. Last fall, he admitted he’d given some thought to moving back to Denmark if Trump won office, quipping, “I’ll stick to my Danish passport. If Trump becomes President and everything goes to s—, I might make my way to the airport and ask if I can get back in again.”
