On this day in rock history, Kiss joined a Michigan high school's homecoming festitivies when an assistant coach wrote to say they'd begun winning football games after listening to the band in their locker room. It was also a signature date for future rock stars, as John Lennon, John Entwistle and Jackson Browne were born – though it was over an eight-year span in the '40s.

Sean Ono Lennon also arrived on his dad's birthday, prompting the ex-Beatles star to retire from the music business for a time. Meanwhile, ex-bandmate Paul McCartney took on their hometown McDonald's when he found out that they had put up a portrait of the Fab Four. McCartney, a famous vegetarian, hadn't endorsed their burgers, of course. It took a while, but managers finally removed the image.

Judas Priest continued to modernize their sound, even if the title of the band's fifth album caused no small amount of confusion. In the U.S., this project is known as Hell Bent for Leather; while it's called Killing Machine almost everywhere else. Bruce Springsteen also released the very personal Tunnel of Love.
