Metallica’s Robert Trujillo Gets Animated for New Short

How does Robert Trujillo stay busy when he isn’t playing bass for Metallica? You’ll soon be able to see the answer for yourself.

Turns out Trujillo’s been hard at work on an animated short, titled ”Tallica Parking Lot,’ that made its public screening debut at Austin’s Fantastic Fest on Sept. 25. It will be screening again on Nov. 2 at the Comikaze Expo in Los Angeles, where Trujillo is scheduled to participate in a Q&A session that will also include ‘Metalocalypse’ creator Brendon Small and ‘Beavis & Butt-Head’ mastermind Mike Judge.

Even if you weren’t at the Fantastic Fest and can’t make it to Comikaze, you can look forward to seeing ”Tallica Parking Lot’ on the DVD and Blu-ray releases of Metallica’s ‘Through the Never,’ which is currently being prepped for home video following its theatrical run. According to Trujillo, the movie combines “big, energetic beats” with “animations panned through 2D and 3D views of the fans that pre-game at Metallica shows … I wrote most of it, but James Hetfield had a heavy hand in helping me finish it. It’s an original music score by Metallica. It has some very cool cameos that range from ‘South Park’ to ‘Beavis & Butt-Head’ and Lemmy from Motorhead.”

As many readers are no doubt aware, ”Tallica Parking Lot’ takes its title (and a substantial portion of its perspective) from ‘Heavy Metal Parking Lot,’ the classic 1986 documentary short that captured fans tailgating before a Judas Priest and Dokken gig. After being passed around as a bootleg for years, it eventually earned a DVD release that added more than two hours of bonus material. Thanks to YouTube, you can see the original short here.
