(Welcome to Bar Fight, the weekly competition where two beers, liquors or mixed drinks fight it out and only one can come out on top…before hitting the bottom of our stomach. In our next match-up, stouts try to knock each other out.)

When most people think about a stout they think it is heavy and filling. Wrong. So, wrong. Actually, stout beers are some of the lightest and most flavorful ales you will find anywhere. Although they can feel very hearty due to their full body, you should not overlook these elegant, low ABV, alternatives to your average beer. Today we are pitting two of the most popular UK stouts against each other, Guinness Irish Stout and Samuel Smith’s Oatmeal Stout. Let us know what you think.

Guinness is a world wide brand and its Irish stout is enjoyed by princes and paupers around the globe. The “Black Stuff” even gets a global toast every year! This is certainly a testament to its lasting quality, and the deep pockets of the Diageo marketing department. Regardless of popularity, there is sometimes nothing like the first sip of a well poured Guinness.

Sam Smiths brews one of the most well crafted dry stouts in the world, out of the oldest brewery in Yorkshire, England. Sam Smiths prides itself in the company’s rich tradition, which its product clearly demonstrates. Although not as well known as Guinness, Oatmeal Stout can be found almost anywhere in the U.S. Rarely will you find it on tap but check the bottle list. We promise you will not be disappointed.
