We're not sure exactly how it happened but a Michigan man fell to his death Tuesday night while working at Michigan Sugar Co. near Bay City.

According to MLive, Bay County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a report of a work-related death Tuesday night at around 7:49 pm at the facility located at 2600 S. Euclid Ave. in Monitor Township. They arrived to find a 53-year-old male employee who had died.

Apparently, he had been cleaning a chute which was up about 120 feet. He fell down to a dual-screw system used to grind sugar beets. Honestly, I don't know what that is but it sounds brutal.

Michigan Sugar Company' statement to MLive-The Bay City Times:

An investigation into the incident is underway and we are cooperating with authorities. The thoughts and prayers of everyone at Michigan Sugar Company are with the family of this employee. As a tightly knit, grower-owned cooperative, any tragedy of this type resonates with all our shareholders and employees. We pause with sadness and hold all those impacted by this event close to our hearts.

I have an extreme fear of heights and just writing this was giving me anxiety. It's truly an awful way to go and our hearts go out to the man's family and loved ones. They must have been devastated to get such terrible news right before Christmas.
