Yesterday was the birthday of Ernie Harwell the great play by play sportscaster and the voice of Detroit Tigers baseball for some 40 years. Ernie was born January 25, 1918 in Washington, Georgia and would grow up in Atlanta. He began his career in 1948 and started calling the Tiger games in 1960.

Ernie was a joy to listen to on the radio, he had the ability to make you feel your right there at the ball park and what a storyteller.
In 1981 Ernie was presented the Ford C. Frick Award at the Baseball Hall Fame. The award is given to a broadcaster for 'major contributions to baseball'.
