Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer is expected to give a live address this afternoon (9/2) at 2:30 with an update on Michigan's coronavirus response.

The exact nature of Whitmer's address is unknown at this time, but published reports indicate that she will be joined by "A Michigan Business Leader" as well as Lt. Gov. Garlin Gilchrist and Dr. Joneigh Khaldun.

Rumors have been circulating for several days that the governor is about to give the green light for fitness centers, bowling alleys, indoor movie theaters, and other such businesses to reopen. According to the Detroit Free Press, that announcement could come this afternoon.

Gyms, theaters, and bowling alleys have been shuttered since March 21st as Michigan took aggressive steps to mitigate the spread of coronavirus.

Last week, Whitmer remained firm on her decision to keep those businesses closed, saying she would not "be bullied" into letting them open until science indicated that it would be safe to do so.

"I'm not going to be bullied into making that decision, I'm going to follow the science, I'm going to work with Dr. Khaldun, but we are looking very closely at those businesses that have been closed for the duration," the governor said.

Two Grand Blanc area gyms were forced to close last month after it was determined that they were operating in violation of Whitmer's Executive Orders.

Last week, Bryan Rief, the owner of several Planet Fitness locations in Michigan, said he is optimistic that an announcement which will allow fitness centers to reopen is coming soon.
