New Limited Detroit Inspired Nike Shoe Also Gives Special Love to Flint

Nike collaborations aren't anything new to fans of the famous brand. From Kobe Bryant to the mega-hit Stranger Things, to the latest Jacquemus, Nike partnerships tell stories and sell shoes. Now, a unique Detroit-themed pair is set to go on sale this week.

The latest from Nike Air Jordan that's all about the "D" is set for release worldwide this Friday, October 21. This past week fans got a pre-sale look at the new shoe when two local Detroit retailers Two 18, located at the Eastern Market,  and sister store Burn Rubber located in Royal Oak held an early release event. Shoppers waited hours in line to get their hands on the soon-to-be hottest shoe in town.

The collaboration incorporated designs for the shoe from the owner of both retail stores, Roland ‘Ro Spit’ Coit. Coit along with Burn Rubber manager Jay John, Two18 manager Alex Collins and Two18 brand manager Mario Butterfield worked as a team to design the shoe that would tell the Detroit story.

“Just a piece of Detroit, our story, that we matter, we’re here, we’ve always been here,” Coit told Click on Detroit.

The story of Detroit starts with the box. The shoe box itself is marked with a Detroit postcard, and the tissue paper the sneakers are wrapped features a map of Detroit as does the insole. Although Detroit is the main focus, there is a nod on the map to other local cities such as Oak Park, Royal Oak, and Pontiac.

Coti and his team also made sure to give some love to Flint. There is a heart around Flint on the map, but it's the sole of the shoe that tells Flint's story. The bottom of the shoe features colors fading from brown to clear as a way to represent the Flint Water Crisis.

“I wanted to show that this is the color of the tainted water and as we move forward we want it to get back to clean clear water,” Coit told Click on Detroit.

As for the shoe itself, the color is described as a "Rockport Boot" brown featuring red and blue stitching. The shoes also come with three pairs of shoe laces in brown, cream, and black.
