Michigan Accidentally Sends Out Double Unemployment
A mistake on the state's part does NOT mean that you get to keep the money, unfortunately.
The state of Michigan was trying to speed up the process of getting unemployment benefits out to struggling residents and ended up paying some recipients double.
No, you cannot keep it.
Michigan's Unemployment Insurance Agency (commonly known as the UIA) informed about 8% of their recipients that double the benefits had been deposited into their accounts.
The benefits came through last Friday; the second over-payment would've been marked as "pending" over the weekend. Those payments were stopped as of yesterday.
The state sent the following message to Michiganders receiving unemployment:
Dear Michigan Worker,
In an effort to expedite unemployment benefits to Michigan workers, the Michigan Unemployment Insurance Agency (UIA), inadvertently sent a dual payment to your account on Friday, May 8, 2020. Depending on your banking institution, this dual payment likely will be displayed as “Pending” in your account and will be removed automatically on Monday, May 11, 2020. The inadvertent dual payment was due to the UIA’s attempt to ensure all employees received a timely payment on Friday instead of Monday. It was discovered on May 9, 2020 and a reversal of the banking transaction was immediately sent to the accounts of all affected customers.
You do not need to take any further action and this will not impact your regular payment. The UIA apologizes for the inconvenience and has ensured that all unemployment benefits disbursed to Michigan workers remain prompt and accurate.
