MSU Suspending Face-to-Face Classes Amid Coronavirus Concerns

Effective at noon today Michigan State University is suspending on face-to-face instruction in classroom settings and is moving to virtual instruction.  All MSU classes will transition to online only while the campus works to prevent the spread of the virus. The suspension will last until April 20.

Parents and students received email notification this morning of the decision. In the email it was noted that MSU students doing purely remote work can return to their residences, which the university encourages. Officials went on to say that if this is not possible, the university will continue to support students in residence halls and dining facilities.

In addition to the suspension of classes, all university-sponsored international travel has also been halted. The university recently suspended all nonessential MSU-sponsored travel to China, Hong Kong, Singapore, South Korea and Italy.

The announcement comes just one day after two cases of cononavirus  were  confirmed in Wayne and Oakland counties.  Yesterday Governor Whitmer declared a state of emergency in response to the confirmation of the first cases in the state. MSU says they've learned of a possible case linked to the campus, which the Ingham County Health Department is currently investigating and monitoring. This has not yet been confirmed.
