Need Fake Pee? It May Soon Be Illegal In Michigan
Marijuana has been legal in the state of Michigan since 2018, which means many Michiganders have been able to enjoy it without risk of getting in trouble for several years.
However, just because Michigan has legalized Marijuana doesn't mean that it's "allowed" in all situations when it comes to employment.
In fact - many companies that have locations across the country, tend to default to the national regulations which still have Marijuana under a Schedule I controlled substance, meaning that it is an illegal drug that has "no known medicinal uses" which, most of us would argue isn't true.
So if you choose to enjoy some of Michigan's legal goods, but you work for a company that has a nationwide or general "no marijuana" policy, one of your only options to "get away" with it, was to use synthetic urine.
While synthetic urine isn't allowed, it has been legal for sale in Michigan. However, if Senate bills 134 and 135 pass, it would make it a misdemeanor punishable by up to a year in jail and a $1,000 fine for someone to “distribute, deliver, sell, or possess with intent to distribute, deliver, or sell a drug masking product.”
How common is the use of Fake Urine?
According to experts, people are now cheating drug tests now more than ever, adding that 18 other states have already banned or criminalized masking products. They say that fake urine manufacturers are engaged in a “cat-and-mouse” game, which has resulted in products that are increasingly effective in passing as legitimate which is causing concern for employers who are legitimately trying to make sure they are above the board and/or keeping their employees safe from accidents due to impairment.
How do people use Fake Urine?
The use of fake urine isn't allowed for drug testing, which is part of the reason why lawmakers want to ban it. So, in order for users to do so, they have to sneak it into the testing area and hope no one catches them using it in place of their own urine. While, many of these testing places do not have a person or camera in the room with you, they do have several procedures in place to try to discourage people from doing this, and it's not recommended unless you want to lose your chance at the position.
While, fake urine will likely still be available for a little longer until these measures make their way through the Michigan legislature, you still have time to stock up. But, you may want to find another option going forward.
