On this Veteran’s Day it reminds me about going off to serve my country. When all my friends were drafted to fight in the Vietnam War and I wasn’t, I visited the local draft board in Lapeer and found out that Beulah Steinberg the head of the draft board had been putting my name to the back of the index card file because she liked listening to me on the radio. I asked her to put my card to the front and I was Vietnam bound serving in the 4th Infantry Division and as a fire direction center computer with Company E 2nd Battalion of the Division’s 35th Infantry near An Khe.

Unlike today, many veterans returned home like I did in plain clothes to avoid comments because the war was unpopular and many back home didn’t see the difference between the war and the troops who served.

Thank you, Veterans.

Peace and Love.
