We all know school violence is a big issue, but who knew stopping it would be cause for controversy?

A 13-year-old boy in Calgary, Canada has gotten into trouble after he jumped in to subdue a student armed with a knife who was threatening a fellow classmate.

After Briar MacLean pushed the armed student away, the vice principal called his mother to report her son had gotten in the middle of a skirmish and had acted inappropriately by failing to get a teacher:

I asked: ‘In the time it would have taken him to go get a teacher, could that kid’s throat have been slit?’ She said yes, but that’s beside the point. That we ‘don’t condone heroics in this school.’”

Then, things really got tense. The police were summoned and searched his locker, while Briar had to give a statement about what happened.

Authorities continue to investigate. No one has been charged with a crime, although the teen with the knife has been suspended.
