A specialized 18-ton military vehicle is the latest to join the Lapeer County Sheriff's Department fleet.

The Detroit Free Press says the department recently acquired the heavily armored machine from the Saginaw County Sheriff's Department. The heavily armored machine is known as an MRAP, which stands for mine resistant ambush proof. It can deflect mines, grenades and gun fire and experienced local veterans have offered to provide free maintenance. The department thinks the MRAP would come in handy during an active-shooter situation and could also be used during a severe weather emergency.

Although the department hasn't heard of any complaints about the new armored vehicle yet, there's a lot of discussion about whether civilian forces should be able to use military vehicles. What do you think of the department's new armored vehicle?
