Disc Jockey Day

National Disc Jockey Day happens today in remembrance of Allan Freed (picture above) who died at the age of 43 on January 20, 1965. Allan aka ‘Moondog’ was a popular DJ in Cleveland and New York City. The story goes that he came up with the term ‘Rock N Roll’.

Disc Jockey, or DJ for short, according the dictionary is a person who conducts a radio broadcast consisting of recorded music, informal talk, commercial announcements, etc. The first disc jockey was a 16 year old named Ray Newby who in 1909
