Back in June we learned that Joe Carnahan (The Grey) is interested in directing Bad Boys 3, and in August it was reported that Sony had officially put the long-awaited sequel on their release calendar for 2017 (along with a spot for Bad Boys 4 in 2019). Not much else has been reported about the third installment in the franchise, but Will Smith himself has officially confirmed that we’ll be seeing Bad Boys 3 very soon.

During an interview with Zane Lowe in the Beats 1 Studio, Smith confirmed that we’ll see Bad Boys 3 soon:

There is a very, very, very strong possibility that you will be seeing a ‘Bad Boys’ within the next 12-16 months

That’s definitely in keeping with the February 2017 release date that was previously reported — February 2017 is indeed 16 months from now, and there’s always a chance that the date could be moved up if everything comes together quickly.

It’s still unclear if Smith will actually return to reprise his role alongside Martin Lawrence, or if he’ll merely act as producer with new, younger actors taking on the franchise. It would be great to see Smith and Lawrence running down bad guys and running from explosions again, but it also might be kind of cool to see them pass the torch to a new generation — Michael B. Jordan comes to mind, obviously.
