Starting today (June 10) , digital license plates are officially available in Michigan.

The days of waiting for hours at the Michigan Secretary of State's office are over. Well, that is if you decide to pay for a digital license plate.

According to the Detroit Free Press, Reviver — the technology company that makes the digital plates — has received approval from state officials to sell the plates in Michigan to consumers and businesses.

Honestly, I didn't even know digital license plates were a thing until today. Obviously, I live under a rock because they've been available in California and Arizona for the past four years. Michigan is officially the third state in the country to offer digital plates to its residents.

How Much Will it Cost to Have a Digital License Plate?

I'm not going to sugar coat this. If you want a digital license plate it's going to come at a somewhat hefty price. Hey, if you want cool futuristic stuff, you're going to have to pay for it. I don't think the price will come as a big shock to Michigan residents though.

There are two Reviver (RPlate)  plate models. One costs $19.95 a month and the other is $24.95 a month. The first $19.95 a month option is for 48 months, which is about $215 a year. The second $24.95 option is a hard-wired, professionally installed model. It is a bit pricier but has some cooler options with it.

You'll also have to a yearly connectivity fee of $55 after the first 48 months.

The best part about these plates besides looking really cool, you can renew your registration via a smartphone app.

Where Do You Go to Buy a Digital License Plate?

You can buy the RPlate directly through Reviver's website or at one of their dealer partner locations in Michigan.
