Hero Dad Delivers Newborn on Side of Busy Highway
We’ve all heard the jokes about babies who were conceived in a car. But being born in a car is a much trickier proposition. Especially when that car is on one of the busiest highways in America.
Anton Antonov was speeding down I-95 in Miami with his wife Oxsana, who was about to go into labor. When she did, Anton realized they wouldn’t be able to make it to the hospital. So he pulled over and began to deliver his daughter himself.
The shoulder of a highway is a dangerous place to be, especially at night. But the quick thinking Anton had called 911 before he started playing doctor out of necessity, which allowed emergency vehicles to zip to the scene and block off traffic.
“We received a call for a person having a child in a car on I-95 and due to high volume of traffic and how fast cars go on that highway, we sent a fire truck and a rescue truck,” Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Captain Eric Baum explained. “We found the mother in front seat, and she’d just given birth a minute before we got there.”
Little Margarita was born with her umbilical cord around her neck and was looking a bit blue. Fortunately, the rescue workers arrived in time to quickly remedy that situation, and both mother and daughter are doing great.
And now Anton and Oxsana have quite the tale to tell Margarita when she is old enough to understand.
